For me, “fun” exercise changes all the time, depending on what I am into at the moment. I guess age might have a factor in this as well. When I was a kid, it was bleachers, sprinting, and weightlifting. I loved it all!

When I got older and started a family, exercise was found in my job because I climbed trees for a living. Everyday was exercise but I loved it. Climbing to the top of trees to tie off and then start trimming or removing was a thrilling experience for nearly 20 years.

Later in life, I went into environmental work which caused me to overeat, gain weight, and become extremely out of shape, so I ended up starting a Couch to 5K program and loved it! For nearly a year I went to every 5K run within a hundred miles, and even got into a few of those Ninja Warrior types of runs. It ended suddenly though when I had a stroke because all my bad foods the years before caused me to have blood clots in my heart which eventually found their way out once was in good health. They traveled up to my brain and boom. It was over. A couple of seizures tore up both my shoulders, broke my arms in several places, and sent me spiraling into despair.

Now, I find fun ways to exercise in things like taking a walk in nature, working on flower beds and gardens, and light days of landscaping or land clearing when my body is able to do it. I truly enjoy this kind of exercise because to be honest, and can’t do any of the other things I would like to do. Hiking mountain trails. Swimming in rivers or lakes. Kayaking. Anything that requires use of my arms. I would say those would be more fun ways to exercise, but they simply aren’t a reality at the moment. Maybe someday it will happen if I keep working with therapy, but for now, I’ll just enjoy the simpler forms of exercise and enjoy each day as it comes.
