To me, freedom is enjoy the simpler things, such as a sunrise. I know that sounds corny, but it’s true. Kids and adults have to wake up and rush to get ready for school and work, rush to eat, rush out the door and never once get to watch the sun that rises everyday while they are doing all the rushing.
Weekends are the same. After a week of getting up early and rushing out the door and cursing the sun in your eyes on the way to work, we chose to sleep in most of the time until way after the sun is up. What is freedom? Not being a slave to society, but unfortunately, it’s nearly impossible to obtain. As Bukowski once said, “Slavery was never abolished, it was only extended to include all the colors.”
I wish there was a way to change it before retirement. Before old age sets in or something tragic happens that causes a person to drop out of the rush of life. I wish there were other alternatives, but for most, there is not anything we can do. We simply have to keep pushing forward with our amended freedom and carry on the best we can.
I do hope more will be able to take the time to watch a few sunrises, though. It truly is the best taste of freedom I’ve ever witnessed.
